Rusty Riggles, Training for a 5k

Well, not really. But I am trying to get MY butt running regularly again. I will NOT buy new jeans. So for the past two nights, I have rushed home from work to get a nice run in before it gets too dark. For the past two nights I’ve said, “I’m not taking Rusty, Greenspring Avenue (my running route of choice) is just too busy and full of stimuli for a puppy.” For the past two nights, I get ready to head out the front door and there sits Rusty, happily anticipating his evening walk. And I can’t leave him. He is so damn cute, and he loves going for walks. So I have taken him, and I have made him run with me.

It has been mostly successful, only the occasional jerk to a stop as Rusty finds some disgusting object on the ground that he has to try and eat. I’m not really ready to take him as far as I would like to run myself, but hey, it is better than nothing. And it really is great to have him with me, it is so much more entertaining, and I love to watch him grow stronger and more adaptable every day. Dogs really do thrive on exercise and Rusty is no exception; he is so darn proud of himself strutting down the street, showing off his white-tip tail and making all the ladies swoon --- except the mean ones.

I swear I am not taking him tonight, because I really want to go much farther than I think his puppy legs are ready for. But I will probably fail, and he will probably come with me, and I will be annoyed and curse at him every time he screeches to a stop for some distant barking dog, squirrel he thinks he can catch, car he finds particularly interesting, or used Kleenex on the ground.

I have lots of good pix to upload... hopefully I will get them up shortly.
