Cutting a Rusty

Rusty got his name, in part, because when I was growing up we had a great dog named Maddie. She was a collie german shepherd mix, and was calm and sweet and loved to go on couple-day deer chases. She always came home completely exhausted and would sleep for days on end, only waking to go to the bathroom when she absolutely had to.

Maddie would get a spark occasionally and do that thing that dogs do where they roll around on their backs in the grass and half-bark half-growl in happiness. When that would happen Dad would say, "Look, Maddie's cuttin' a rusty!" or "She's cuttin' a shine!" I have no idea where this came from, what it means, or if Dad just made it up, but it is the perfect way to describe it.

So, by naming him Rusty, hopefully I'm preordaining a happy carefree existence with lots of shine-cutting in the grass.
